Attention:

The product has many glaze cracks on it. When hung on the wall, these cracks are not noticeable from a distance of 2 meters. The product you ordered is completely handmade Iznik ceramic. As you may know, the surface of ceramics is covered with glaze.

The glaze on the ceramics can crack, which is natural for Iznik ceramics. Glaze cracks have also appeared on the Iznik tiles in the historic Selimiye Mosque. A glaze crack is definitely not a defect.

SHAHDAR; (Cracks in Ceramics)

A term from Ottoman Turkish meaning "branching" or "budding". In ceramic works, cracks that form in the glaze (glass melt) due to humidity and moisture are called SHAHDAR. Every ceramic may develop SHAHDAR. Some might develop it in a few days, while some may take centuries. This is similar to the wrinkles that appear on humans as we age. During the Ottoman period, artists would attribute different meanings to every motif and color they painted on ceramics, and for SHAHDAR, they said: "Just as a man's skin wrinkles with age, ceramics too get SHAHDAR."

Motif Information; Damascus Style Motif:

The "Damascus style" motif represents several things, including the beauty of nature, the abundance of life, and the power of the Ottoman Empire.

  • Beauty of Nature: The "Damascus style" motif is often filled with stylized flowers and other motifs inspired by nature. This suggests that the motif represents the beauty of nature.
  • Abundance of Life: The "Damascus style" motif is characterized by the use of vibrant colors, suggesting that it represents the abundance of life.
  • The Power of the Ottoman Empire: The "Damascus style" motif was developed during the rise of the Ottoman Empire. This suggests that the motif symbolizes the power of the Ottoman Empire.

The "Damascus style" motif is a beautiful and unique form of Iznik ceramic decoration. It is a reminder of Turkey's rich history and culture and continues to be popular today.

"Damascus ware" is a term for a group of ceramic vessels produced in Iznik in the mid-16th century.

The name was attributed by Western collectors as the first examples were brought from Damascus to Europe in the late 19th century, but recent studies have revealed that these vessels were not produced in Damascus, but in Iznik. They represent some of the most refined examples of Iznik ceramic art.

Today, these ceramics, often referred to as "pomegranate-artichoke" due to their ornamental motifs, are famous for their distinct feature: bright colors such as blue, white, and turquoise, with sage green and eggplant purple added to the outlines.

In "Damascus ware", the tight compositional approach of earlier periods is abandoned, and motifs are used sparingly. Large plants resembling pomegranates or artichokes, covered with structures resembling beads, are arranged freely, sometimes symmetrically, on a white ground.

Other motifs include flowers like tulips, roses, carnations, trees, and reed leaves.
